weathergeek's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- waiting tables when i worked at the 2 chinese restaurants in white rock, i worked primarily as a delivery driver. and that was a great job. one of the best i've ever had, actually. in fact, if i were able to find such a job (using their vehicle) now i would take it--mostly to fill the nights rather than supplement my income. anyhow, for a while i was also pulling double duty as a waiter at kw gardens. this was my first and only waiting job and, as such, it wasn't that bad--by that point i knew the menu inside-out, what was good and i would therefore recommend, and most of the mechanics of waiting on a table. so one night, i got to serve dr. and mrs. q. dr. q. was a cosmetic surgeon who worked in the area; he and his wife were in their 60s and obviously well-to-do. (as a side note, i wonder if they're still around.) dr. and mrs. q. were well-known to kw gardens--they came in about once a month, always with a reservation, would order among the most expensive items on the menu as well as a bottle of wine, and tip well. so whenever their reservation was made, an instant fight occurred amongst the wait staff, arguing and pleading to the boss to be chosen to serve them. so when my night to serve them came along i was a) surprised because i hadn't begged to serve them, b) staving off eye-daggers from my coworkers because i hadn't begged to serve them, and c) frankly shocked because of all the servers, i was by far the least experienced. (speaking of the servers, i wonder how bill s, crista and amber e, linda s and lisa b are doing. as well as cooks henry t, ken w, bill w, ms. w., yuen-san, william y and jack c.) they ordered the 3 most expensive things on the menu and a fairly pricey bottle of wine; i can't remember too much about serving them (as this was, after all, about 15 years ago) but i do remember that i didn't fuck up at all but i wasn't particularly memorable either. at the end of it the bill went to them and dr. q. put his credit card in the little folder, as always. i think the bill was somewhere around 70 or 80 dollars. pretty big for a chinese meal for 2 at that time. i ran through his card and took it back to the table. (his was the only american express platinum card i had ever seen up until then and even until now. we had our own urban legend around the restaurant that this was a card without limit; my 3 seconds of research shows that this was indeed possible but unlikely.) when they left after another wonderful meal chez kw, i went to clear the table and of course see how much the tip was. no wonder everyone fought over serving them. the tip was $50. fifty bucks! my coworkers told me that this was typical with them. 7:29 p.m. - 2009-12-16 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
